Polish referee Szymon Marciniak clarified the reason and process of denying Julan Laverez’s penalty against Real Madrid in the round of 16 match in CL on Thursday.
Referee Szymon Marciniak Explained The Overturning Moment Of Julian Alvarez, Clarifying All The Details Regarding Controversy
The referee and VAR had to face a lot of criticism following the overturning decision on a spot kick in the penalty shootout. The debate is going on due to the double touch rule that even reached a certain level that UEFA is considering to change the rule and exclude “unintentional touch” condition from the rule.
Marciniak Take All The Responsibility Of Going To Var Without Any Influence
The match Referee, Szymon Marciniak, clarified that he initially suspected the double touch on the ball during the attempt and reached the VAR. He reported, “I was the one who informed the VAR referees that there was a 99% chance that Alvarez touched the ball twice, and they checked it thoroughly.”

“It is absolutely false that Mbappe told me anything about the two touches,” he added. It denies the chance of any external influence regarding the decision, as some portals and fans claim it's Mbappe who drew attention to the double touch.
UEFA is Controlling The Situation And Avoiding A Repetition Of The Incident
It is evident that Atletico and its fans are not happy even after intervention of UEFA in this as the result of the match would not change with the fact, and they consider this as a sheer robbery to give an advantage for Los Blancos in CL.
Regarding the agitation, UEFA confirmed, “although minimal, the player made contact with the ball using his standing foot before kicking it, as shown in the attached video clip. Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the VAR had to call the referee signalling that the goal should be disallowed.”
