Marcelo had 58 national caps and scored six goals but never lifted a major international trophy except for silver and bronze Olympic medals at the 2012 and 2008 Games, respectively. Marcelo shared a heartfelt video on social media on his retirement, stating “My story as a player ends here. But I still have much to give to football. Thank you for so much.” The official statement from Real Madrid came that stated, “Marcelo is a significant part of Real Madrid's history and one of the great legends of our club and global football”

Florentino Perez commented on the retirement of Marcelo, “One of the greatest left-backs in Real Madrid and world football history, and we had the privilege of watching him for a long time." Perez added, “He is one of our greatest legends and Real Madrid is and always will be his home."

Apart from these former Real Madrid Players, Cristiano, Isco, and Varane all thanked Marcelo and wished him a happy retirement. Vinicius paid tribute and defined Marcelo as “a forward who played as a full-back” and wrote “I miss your dribbles, goals, and assists... Thank you for everything. You are a warrior!”
