Manchester United looked to be back in the winning ways after their epic triumph at the Etihad last weekend when they defeated their arch rivals Manchester City. The blue sides of the Manchester may not be in a great form lately, but a victory at Etihad Stadium is always a happy feeling for the Red Devils fans.
But even after this big win, once again Manchester United had to face another defeat and this time at White Hart Lane in the Quarter Final clash of the League Cup. The match was a 4-3 thriller but swallowing four goals is never worth any excuse. A lot of defensive errors could be seen from Manchester United defense, overall the performance from the Red Devils were really poor.
Manchester United Legend Bashes Lisandro Martinez For Error Against Tottenham Hotspurs
Speaking about poor defending, Manchester United Legend pointed out the mistake committed by Lisandro Martinez on the second goal which led to second goal of Tottenham Hotspurs. During the post match discussion, Gary Neville showed his anger about Martinez’s error which led to the second;
"I have to say the clearance from Lisandro Martinez is quite simply appalling. To play that straight to Kulusevski," said the former Manchester United man.
"He’s been let down by two poor mistakes, Ruben Amorim. He really has. You can talk about structure, shape, patterns tactics, but if your goalkeeper parries one out into the centre of the box and your centre back flicks one with the outside of his left boot…it’s a wimpish clearance."
Lisandro Martinez is Active in Manchester United Since 2022
Gary Neville was not the only pundit who bashed Martinez for his mistake. Former Liverpool and English international defender Jamie Carragher also took a hand on the Argentine International. The 46 year old quoted the following;
"I think a worry for United fans is Lisandro Martinez. I didn't think he'd play well in a back four because he's small, but he had a really good first season," Carragher said on Sky Sports.
Lisandro Martinez's Error Led United to Swallow 2nd Goal Against Spurs at League Cup Defeat
"In some ways you'd think he'd be suited to a back three, he can step out on his left foot and he's got two big defenders next to him. But I don't think he's looked as comfortable since Amorim came in. He had a really poor night."
The outcome may look like a fighting score but all three goals that Manchester United scored could be prevented easily. The first two goals were two awful mistakes from Sours goalkeeper Frazer Forster and it was really difficult to digest the fact that an experienced goalkeeper like Forster could make such mistakes.
