It never looked like WWE ever had any big plans for LA Knight in WWE. Even in the NXT, he was just a lower mid card. When he made his main roster debut, he was playing the character of Max Dupri; only a manager for a jobber tag team. Vince McMahon did not think he could be a big deal in the ring at his age.
After Triple H became the Head of Creative, he decided to change his character back to LA Knight which he played in the NXT. But The Cerebral Assassin did not have any big plans for him either. He was mostly being used as a lower mid card to promote future talents. The fans still remember how he jobbed to Bray Wyatt at Royal Rumble 2023.
LA Knight Discusses Being Over With The Fans and Says He Never Understood The Reason
But surprisingly, Knight became extremely over with the fans and he also used to get excellent reaction from the fans. He even became one of the top merch sellers. Knight recently discussed being over with the fans and said he never understood the reason when he was asked the reason. Speaking with WittyWhittier, he said;

“Short answer, I don’t know. I really don’t know. Because I mean, if you look at everything that was going on at the time when that rise really started happening, the only thing I could really attribute it to was just taking advantage of some of the time that I had when I was doing the whole deal with Bray Wyatt. But at the time, still, it was kind of like, ‘We don’t know about this guy.’”

“But it seems like once I got out of that, I didn’t really have any direction. For months, there was nothing happening with me. But somehow in that time is when, oh, wait a minute. I think we kind of like this guy. I don’t know what it was, but clearly I must have been making the most of my time. Because I wasn’t doing a damn thing. So something was hitting. I don’t know what it is, and I can’t attribute it to anything.”
Unlike Vince McMahon, Triple H rewarded Knight for his immense success as he had been given an amazing WWE United States Championship run. He defeated Logan Paul at Summerslam to win the title. He is still active in Smackdown and he is one of the most popular stars of the brand.
